Construction of the Great Wall began during the Spring-Autumn period (700 B.C-221 B.C). in order to defend themselves and ward off invasions of the nomadic people in the north, ducal states constructed the Great Wall in segments along the mountain ridges of strategic importance, in the year 221 B.C when Qin Shi Huang unified China, he had the existing segmented Great Wall linked up. It is the greatest military defence project built in ancient times.

The Great Wall at Badaling in suburban Beijing is among the best preserved stretches of the Great Wall. The Badaling pass tower was first constructed in 1505, with West and East gates. It lies among undulating mountains and is one of the most imposing stretches. Opening hours of the Great Wall at Badaling are 0630-1900 in summer and 0700-1800 in winter.

The Great Wall was recorded in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1987.
